Issues
Campaign Platform:
During my next term on the County Board, I pledge to devote time and energy to those things that make our community special. I will be building on a proud record of progressive government but striving none the less to take Arlington to the next level. Here are the areas I will focus on:
Public Education:
Funding our first rate public schools. All of Arlington’s high schools are ranked in the top 1% of high schools in the Country according to U.S. News and World Report. The challenge before us is to continue to reduce the minority achievement gap and to invest in state-of-the-art facilities. I am committed to both of these goals.
Transit and Pedestrian Services:
Arlington has been able to thrive and grow while still respecting the environment and minimizing the need for cars. I want to make transit opportunities in the County as seamless as possible especially for routes that run North and South. I will continue to advocate for longer street crossing lights, better median refuge spots, and wider crosswalks and sidewalks.
Enhanced Open Space and Recreational Opportunities:
Through a wise use of density transfers, Arlington acquired approximately 28 acres of open space now referred to as Long Bridge Park, recently called the North Tract. The County Board approved a long rang plan that includes both passive and active recreation on this site, the cornerstone of this plan is an aquatic center. I will actively work to establish partnerships to help defray the public expense of developing this park while honoring this community vision for this site.
Affordable Housing:
Arlington is a diverse community with a need for housing that is affordable to folks from all walks of life and all income brackets. I will continue to strive to make inroads in this very important area. I want to focus particular attention on the preservation of market rate affordable housing and forge new partnerships with non-profit providers to create new affordable housing opportunities.
Human Services:
Arlington is a compassionate and caring community. Fortunately, my belief that the most vulnerable among us should be given the support they need to achieve independence and to strive for their dreams is a belief shared by my fellow Arlingtonians. My focus in the next four years will be to create a 24 hour, 7 day a week Crisis Intervention Center in Arlington.
I hope this platform gives you a sense of who I am as a person and how I will guide County resources to improve our community. I value citizen participation in County decision-making and always ensure that all of Arlington’s residents benefit from County services and programs. Thank you for reading this page.
