Legislative Update SB 554: Protecting Survivors of Domestic Violence

On Wednesday  my domestic violence bill passed through the Republican-led Courts of Justice Committee 9-6 and will soon be heard on the floor of the Senate. This law would strengthen protections for survivors of domestic violence during the 72 hours when an emergency protective order is in effect. My bill prohibits abusers from physically possessing a firearm in the home of the victim during the duration of the protective order. The Virginia Sheriffs Association and the Virginia Coalition of Chiefs of Police support this measure to prevent domestic violence from escalating to deadly violence.

The Washington Times reported my bill was the single gun-control measure to gain traction in an afternoon that saw several measures weakening oversight on gun-trafficking pass out of committee.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reported on Wednesday's full docket.
