Sen. Favola: "We will fight this power grab all the way!"
Yesterday, in half an hour, Senate Republicans rammed through a plan in violation of the State Constitution on which there have been no hearings, no public discussion, and no analysis. The people of Virginia had the opportunity to hear for over six months about the redistricting plans adopted in 2011. They were able to speak out on behalf of their own communities. It's clear the Senate Republicans only care about their narrow and divisive agenda.
Moreover, this is blatantly unconstitutional:
The Virginia Constitution makes no provision for off-year redistricting. The Virginia Constitution requires that redistricting:
- takes place "in the year 2011 and every ten years thereafter"
- takes effect "for the November general election... that is held immediately prior to the expiration of the term being served in the year that the reapportionment law is required to be enacted."
